A glass of red, a bunch of grapes, a single vine leaf. The oldest subject in painting, attempted honestly.

The story behind the work

Every painter eventually has to paint the glass of wine — it is a rite of passage, a conversation with five hundred years of dead masters. I kept the ground grey and muted so the wine could be the only deep, living colour in the frame: that bruised, luminous red sitting in the bowl of the glass. A humble homage to everyone who painted this before me, and a promise to keep looking.
