Artist statement

I paint to slow the world down.

I paint to slow the world down. In a culture that scrolls past everything, I am interested in the image that asks you to stay — the fisherman leaning into the tide, the mother folded around her child, the man who sits with his back to us and watches the sky come apart.

My work moves between two languages I refuse to separate: the handmade and the designed. I was trained in communication design — taught to make a message land — and I make art to ask the questions that messages cannot answer. Ballpoint pen, oil, acrylic, the cheap and the precious side by side; the medium matters less to me than whether the thing is true.

I am Fante, raised on the Cape Coast where the Atlantic still carries the memory of departure. That coast is in everything I make — its labour, its faith, its colour, its grief and its impossible brightness. I am trying to paint contemporary African life without flattening it into either suffering or celebration, because it has always been both at once.

If the work does its job, a stranger somewhere recognises themselves in a face that does not look like theirs. That recognition — across distance, across difference — is the only thing I have ever wanted to make.

The collections

Five bodies of work, one preoccupation

Every collection circles the same question from a different direction: how do we hold the full weight of being alive — labour and leisure, grief and brightness — in a single frame?
