The story behind the work
Three cherries and the white space around them. I love the restraint this forces — there is nowhere to hide a weak passage when the subject is this simple. The whole painting lives or dies on the highlight, that single point of white where the skin turns to glass. Get it right and the fruit is suddenly, almost embarrassingly, alive.
