Two spent lightbulbs, rendered almost entirely in grey. A meditation on glass, light and obsolescence.

The story behind the work

Glass is the hardest thing to paint — it has no colour of its own, only what passes through it — so I stripped everything else away and worked in greys. Two incandescent bulbs, already an old technology, lie together like a still life of something we have agreed to throw away. There is a tenderness I feel toward obsolete objects. They did their one job, beautifully, and then we moved on.
