The story behind the work
I took the most looked-at painting in the world and rubbed out the one thing everybody comes to see — her face — then put a game controller in her hands. If she sat for years to be immortalised, what would she be doing today? The same thing as the rest of us: heads down, thumbs moving, faces gone blank in the glow. It is a joke, but the kind that stops being funny if you sit with it.
