A young man holds his own face in both hands and looks straight out at you. A self-portrait about the labour of being awake to the world.

The story behind the work

This is the closest thing to a self-portrait in the collection. The hands holding the face are not despair — they are the simple, daily weight of paying attention, of feeling things fully in a world that rewards numbness. I drew it entirely in blue ballpoint, letting the texture of the paper come through like static. It is the drawing I keep for myself; it is the one that keeps me honest.

Artist's note

Not for sale. Some drawings are receipts for who you were on a particular day.
