A bay at sunset, the water turned to hammered gold, a distant headland crowned by an outstretched figure. Painting as pure, unembarrassed colour.

A bay at sunset, the water turned to hammered gold, a distant headland crowned by an outstretched figure. Painting as pure, unembarrassed colour.
Painted from a longing to travel I could not yet afford — a sunset over a far-away bay, the water broken into a thousand strokes of gold and green and violet. I let myself be unfashionable here, openly in love with beauty, laying colour next to colour with no irony at all. Sometimes the most radical thing a contemporary painter can do is simply admit that a sunset is beautiful and try to deserve it.
