Two women in white, seen from behind, moving through green light. A painting about belonging, faith and the dignity of getting dressed for something.

I almost never paint faces in this series — I paint backs, because a back turned to you is an invitation to follow. These two are dressed for church, or a naming, or a funeral; in Ghana the same good dress carries you through all of them. The landscape swallows them in green and gold. I wanted the viewer to feel the pull of belonging to a place and a people, the quiet certainty of walking somewhere you are expected.
