Between the Brief and the Canvas

I was trained to make a message land. Communication design is the discipline of clarity — of taking a brief, an audience and a goal, and engineering an image that does its job in the half-second before someone scrolls on.
That training is in everything I paint, and I have made my peace with it. It is why my compositions are direct, why I am not afraid of a strong idea, why 'Mona, Player One' works as a single clean joke before it works as anything deeper.
But art is where I get to ask the questions a brief can never answer. The brief wants a result; the painting is allowed to want nothing, to simply be true. I refuse to separate the two languages. The designer makes the message land. The painter asks whether the message was worth sending. I need both to feel like myself.
